Seventeen years ago on November 20, 2004, John Marco launched the first Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in New Jersey. Fast forward to 2021, we have grown to over 500 spas across the United States and Canada and almost 100 in development. We consistently add new services and enhancements to always offer our customers the latest and greatest in massage and skincare.
In 2004, we started with a simple premise: bring top-quality spa services, including therapeutic massage, facials, and hair removal to the middle market at prices that are 30% less than traditional day spas and with hours and locations that are more convenient. Almost two decades later, we are proud to still deliver our initial promise.
Our founder's son, Nick Marco, reminisces on the early days of our brand, “I can still remember being that annoyed teenager hearing my Dad interview people at our dining room table for his “corporate office”. I can never express my gratitude enough for having a front seat to the growth of Hand & Stone. Even through experiencing a global pandemic, it has always felt like the trajectory of Hand & Stone’s growth is pointing nowhere but UP! I am more proud than ever to be a Franchisee and Regional Developer in a brand that does so much good for people’s mental and physical well-being." Nick is a powerhouse franchisee, overseeing nine successful spas in New Jersey, and is actively developing our footprint in the state of Ohio.
Our seventeenth year in business has been a busy one, to say the least. In addition to incredible organic growth at the spa level, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa made its first Canadian acquisition, purchasing the 24-unit Massage Experts franchise to add to our existing 32-location footprint in the country. In August, John Teza was appointed to Chief Executive Officer, as Todd Leff transitioned to Chairman of the Board of Directors. Hand & Stone also built its corporate store division, acquiring ten high-performing franchise spas.
We were lucky enough to celebrate our ‘birthday’ in the office this past week, complete with ‘17’ balloons and Hand & Stone colored cupcakes.
As this year comes to a close, our CEO, John Teza, is looking forward to the year ahead. “The founders, franchise owners, corporate team, and corporate spa employees at Hand & Stone have built such a phenomenal foundation of success. We are incredibly excited to continue building upon that foundation and know that the company has an incredibly bright future.”
